Time for a Fresh Start

Have you ever watched a dream you had die?  Maybe your vision changes or the circumstances no longer apply.  There are times when we dedicate an enormous amount of time, energy, and money and it doesn’t work out for one reason or another.   Sacrifice doesn’t always work out the way we expected.  Greatness takes hard work , persistence, and sometimes a fresh start.

Quitting doesn’t always mean giving up.  Knowing when to change course is often critical.  God may be closing one door to prepare you for the next.  Watching a dream die isn’t fun but it can build character, strengthen your faith, and bring you closer to the next opportunity He had in store for you.

I loved a post over at www.biblemoneymatters.com about choices having consequences.  We are all responsible for our future.  We are accountable for our actions.  We can either look at ourselves as a victim, play the blame game, or accept the results and move on.  Don’t just standstill! Pick yourself up, dust off, and press forward.

Sometimes, we just need a fresh start and new perspective.  A new perspective on your faith, your marriage, your career, your business, or maybe where you are heading financially.  The choices we make each day impact where we are going in the future.  How are the choices you are making today?

Have You Ever been Betrayed? What Did You Do?

The ultimate betrayal

Judas gave us the ultimate example of betrayal with one kiss.  Just  one kiss set the stage for the greatest story ever told.  It was Judas’ lips that set in motion the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus’ blood – payment for the sins of mankind.  As was written in Matthew  26:47-50:

“While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve,  arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. Now the betrayer  had arranged a signal with them: ‘The one I kiss is the man; arrest  him.’ Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, ‘Greetings, Rabbi!’ and kissed him. Jesus replied, ‘Friend, do what you came for.’ Then the  men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him.”

We can look on and question how could one man betray the Son of God? If Judas could betray God, mankind can do anything.  Sin, unfortunately, is a part of our nature.

Have you ever been betrayed?

Maybe it was a relationship? Or in a friendship? Or possibly in a  business setting? Or somewhere else? Where you thought people who were  supposed to be for you were actually against you?  Sometimes there are people in our lives we can never please… No  matter what you do isn’t good enough. They can always find fault.  They may pretend they want you to succeed but they are waiting for you to fail.  Or maybe they never say thank you. They keep taking, taking, and taking. Always criticizing…

How we react to betrayal is our chance to show love, mercy, and grace. The human  emotion is to seek revenge, to want justice, to desire redemption, but the correct attitude is to pray even for your enemies.

I will be honest, Betrayal stings. It leaves a bitter taste in your mouth. It rips you to your core when someone you thought was your friend becomes an enemy.  It takes a while to settle the emotions.  All you can do is pray for them and know one day they have to answer to  God…

I would love to hear your thoughts…

Greater Things are Still to be Done…

Was listening to God of this City by Chris Tomlin this morning. Music always seems to inspire me, to stir something within me. I started thinking about the body of Christ and how many call themselves  Christian yet act in a manner that doesn’t reflect Christ’s love.

The Great Disconnect

You see, we all seem to have a disconnect. We compartmentalize many areas of our life:  maybe for you it’s your finances, your business, your work life, your friendships, or some other area. There are parts of our lives that we do not allow God in or allow Him to take control.  For some reason, we insist that we can do a better job than God Himself at managing parts of our life!  It sounds crazy, but that’s exactly what we do!

With all the problems in our world today why do so many Christians often battle with one another? With all the work that needs to be done, shouldn’t we be more concerned about helping others – feeding the poor, sharing the Gospel, showing His love, and building our communities to name a few, rather than fighting with one another?

The biggest obstacle to Christianity is often other Christians

Often, the biggest obstacle to attracting others to Christ is other Christians. That guy calls himself a Christian and acts like that? No thanks! What if we all acted in a way that reflected Christ’s character and love, wouldn’t others be more open to the Gospel?

God works in mysterious ways and is in control of everything! We certainly cannot save others, but we can provide a better example so that hearts may be opened to receive what God has in store for the people you come into contact with every day!

In the words of Chris Tomlin:
“There is no one like our God

For greater things have yet to come
And greater things are still to be done in this City
Greater thing have yet to come
And greater things are still to be done in this City”

The NFL Got It Right with Ben

In case you missed it: Pittsburgh Steelers team leader and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger just got handed a six game suspension for allegedly sexually assaulting a 20 year old woman in the VIP section of a night club. Though he wasn’t convicted of an illegal activity, his behavior was penalized.  NFL Commissioner, Roger Goodell  justified his logic behind the suspension:

“I recognize that the allegations in Georgia were disputed and that they did not result in criminal charges being filed against you,” he said in his letter to the two-time Super Bowl winner, a six-year veteran.

“My decision today is not based on a finding that you violated Georgia law, or on a conclusion that differs from that of the local prosecutor. That said, you are held to a higher standard as an NFL player, and there is nothing about your conduct in Milledgeville that can remotely be described as admirable, responsible, or consistent with either the values of the league or the expectations of our fans.”

Now this is the same guy who got in the serious motorcycle accident (without a helmet on) and the same guy still facing a civil suit for another sexual assault allegation.  A football player, especially a quarterback, has the responsibility of leading his team on and off the field.  I don’t know where Ben stands with his faith. I’m not here to judge and ridicule Ben’s actions, but it makes you think about my own life:  Am I conducting myself in a manner that reflects Christ’s love or am I portraying myself in a bad light?  The best way we can see Christ on earth is through His people.  How are you conducting yourself in your finances? In your marriage?  In your business?  Are you reflecting Christ’s love or are you giving people yet another reason to justify why they don’t want to follow Christ?  Think long and hard about that one…

What are your thoughts on the severity of the suspension?

Should You Have a Will Or a Trust?

Should you have a living trust?

from my post at ChristianPf.com

Not everyone needs a living trust. However, the larger and more complex your estate becomes, the greater your need for effective estate planning to minimize taxation and pass assets and property to those you care about most.  A living trust can be an essential tool to facilitate that planning.

Here are a few advantages of having a living trust and 5 reasons why it may make sense for you:

  1. A revocable living trust trumps a basic will. It contains all the instructions on where you want your money to go, and it offers you (the trustee) additional benefits.
  2. A correctly funded trust avoids probate while a will ensures probate to prove its validity. Probate will cost your beneficiaries time and money.  In certain states, the probate process can drag on for years. Additionally, a will can be made public and can be challenged in court.  A living trust preserves your family’s privacy and cannot be contested.
  3. A living trust can be used to tell your love ones your wishes if you were to become severely ill, disabled, or incapacitated. While a durable power of attorney gives someone the power to act legally on your behalf, not all financial institutions will recognize it. Valid living trusts are accepted by all financial institutions. Living trusts allow other trustees such as your spouse or another alternate trustee to step in and manage your affairs if you are unable to, without court approval.
  4. A living trust can also save on estate taxes if properly structured – split into two trusts upon the death of one spouse (what is commonly referred to as an AB trust). This preserves the estate tax credit of the spouse who died and the unlimited marital deduction for the remainder of the estate.
  5. A living trust lets you transfer assets to your heirs with conditions attached to preserve your final wishes. This allows you to control the way your assets are distributed even after you’re gone.

So a living trust sounds perfect…well what about the downside of these trusts?

With all these advantages what could possibly be the downside?  Well, for starters, many who have simple estates may not need a trust…just now.   If you are in your 30s, 40s, or 50s, you may have another 20 plus years before you pass away.  Laws and estate tax situations change.  It may be years before any of your instructions are implemented.  Your final wishes could change several times before now and the time the Lord calls you home.

As an alternative, a well-written will and durable power of attorney may suffice until later in life. If you are married, any joint assets and property generally will pass from one spouse to another without probate.

Another downside to a trust is cost.  What costs a few hundred for a will can often cost thousands of dollars for a trust.  Is this expense justifiable at this stage of your life?  It may or may not make sense to set up a trust today.

Be careful if you have setup a trust.  Even if setup, some people never fund them. Meaning, they have the trust drawn up, but they never transfer assets from their name into the name of the trustee of the trust.  I have seen far too many people make this common mistake! They properly fill out the paperwork or say they’ll get around to it “someday.” They then pass away without placing their bank accounts, investments, real estate, etc. into the trust. This would then expose those assets to probate and defeat the whole point of the trust.  You need someone to look over your estate planning documents to make sure they are in good order.

It is often wise to have both a will and a trust.

Most likely, you would not put all of your assets into a living trust. There could be some assets outside of your trust that could be left in a will such as jewelry, family heirlooms, or other sentimental items. You could also use a document such as a pour over will to transfer any remaining assets outside the trust into the trust.  This would allow those assets to be distributed according to the terms of the trust. So as you can see, wills and trusts can often complement one another.

What makes the most sense for your situation?

In order to find out what makes the most sense for you personally, I advise talking with a Certified Financial Planner™ and an estate planning attorney.  Form a team to help you implement your final wishes and pass wealth in the most tax advantageous way.
