The topic of cloning has always sparked great debates from scientists and theologians to dinner table conversations.  Even Hollywood wants in on the action.  Movies have wrestled with the topic ranging from the movie Godsend showing the dangers of cloning a child to the humorous side showing how we could solve all of our time problems by creating doubles of ourselves as depicted in Multiplicity. 

I must say, I read a story today that was not humorous at all.  BioArts International, a US biotech company, announced today it will auction off the right for five dog owners to have their furry best friend cloned.  Starting bids? get this $100,000!!!   A trip to their website shows the following ad:  “What if you could be best friends..again?”

BioArts is taking bids via an online auction system to allow five pet owners to duplicate their dogs using the same cloning methods used back in 1996 to clone Dolly the sheep.  I don’t know about you, but this creeps me out and disturbs me.

Since when did we get the right to play God?  When did we get the right to create life?  It’s animals today..what about humans in the future?  While we’re at it, let’s only make perfect looking, well behaved humans that do as we say.  God is in control for a reason. He has a plan for each and every person and each and every creature and I am quite sure it is not cloning.  It also extends to embryonic stem cell research and other areas of medicine where we cross from trying to save lives to trying to play God.  I will concede that God gave us ingredients on this earth for medicine and brains in our heads to form logic but he also programmed us with morals.  These morals should not only be reflected in our daily actions, behaviors, and choices, but in the bigger decisions we face… one being where we invest.

I love my dog.  I truly do…but cloning him?  Come on…that idea is one sick puppy!
