Anything worse than debt?
There could be worse things than being in debt, but when you’re struggling to stay afloat and keep your head above water in a whirlpool of debt, you’d give your right arm to be free of any kind of money trouble. It’s easy to get rid of debt once you’ve taken the decision to do so – the acknowledgement of any problem and the desire to solve it is very often the foundation needed to build the answer. So now that you’re on the right track, let’s see how you can find the inspiration and encouragement to become debt-free forever:
- Take tiny steps towards your goal: Too many people fail in money matters because they try to do too much at once; the effort becomes hard to sustain over a period of time, and they give up altogether and slip back into the vortex of debt. So start out slowly, set attainable goals, and take pride in achieving each of them. This way, you’re motivated to stay on track and chip off at your mountain of debt, surely and steadily.
- Talk to people who have done it before you: If you think something is impossible, the best way to find encouragement to go ahead with the task is to learn from the example of those who have done it before you. Join a support group and listen to stories of people who have set out to clear their slates of debt and start out anew – this will give you the encouragement to stay on track.
- Change your habits: The reason for your debt is your lifestyle – you’ve spent without any kind of control, you’ve racked up credit card debt because you paid just the minimum balance and allowed the interest to accumulate, and you haven’t prepared a budget let alone adhered to it. Once you decide to get out of debt, you have to make a conscious decision to change your lifestyle, especially the bad habits that were instrumental in getting you into this situation in the first place. With every negative money habit you change, the more inspired and encouraged you are to get rid of your debt.
The key to getting rid of debt is to do it forever; and for this, you not only have to strive to pay off what you owe, you also have to bring about a significant change in your lifestyle by enforcing discipline and self-control when it comes to money matters.
