The NFL Got It Right with Ben
In case you missed it: Pittsburgh Steelers team leader and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger just got handed a six game suspension for allegedly sexually assaulting a 20 year old woman in the VIP section of a night club. Though he wasn’t convicted of an illegal activity, his behavior was penalized. NFL Commissioner, Roger Goodell justified his logic behind the suspension:
“I recognize that the allegations in Georgia were disputed and that they did not result in criminal charges being filed against you,” he said in his letter to the two-time Super Bowl winner, a six-year veteran.
“My decision today is not based on a finding that you violated Georgia law, or on a conclusion that differs from that of the local prosecutor. That said, you are held to a higher standard as an NFL player, and there is nothing about your conduct in Milledgeville that can remotely be described as admirable, responsible, or consistent with either the values of the league or the expectations of our fans.”
Now this is the same guy who got in the serious motorcycle accident (without a helmet on) and the same guy still facing a civil suit for another sexual assault allegation. A football player, especially a quarterback, has the responsibility of leading his team on and off the field. I don’t know where Ben stands with his faith. I’m not here to judge and ridicule Ben’s actions, but it makes you think about my own life: Am I conducting myself in a manner that reflects Christ’s love or am I portraying myself in a bad light? The best way we can see Christ on earth is through His people. How are you conducting yourself in your finances? In your marriage? In your business? Are you reflecting Christ’s love or are you giving people yet another reason to justify why they don’t want to follow Christ? Think long and hard about that one…
What are your thoughts on the severity of the suspension?

As a lifelong Steeler fan, it is disheartening to see Big Ben acting the way he is. I agree that the NFL got it right in the suspension of 6 games, although that will probably be lessened 1 or 2 games as the time comes close. The suspension will set the whole team back, but the character of Ben even more so. Why do so many superstar athletes or other people at the top their world fall to moral failure like this?
